Changing Places Community Day

10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
The exhibit Changing Places: From Back and White to Technicolor is being extended! Celebrate with music, meet people featured in the exhibit, enjoy activities for all ages and more. Plus, free admission all day!
Originally scheduled to close in February, the exhibit will run through November 2010, with related programming and facilitated dialogues continuing into the fall.

Join us for a FREE community day where the theme is multi-everything! In addition to the exhibit and free admission, guests will experience a fun mix of cultures, people, dance, music, conversation, arts and crafts.

All exhibits open and multicultural crafts throughout the day.

Art exhibit from UNC Charlotte's senior art projects related to cultural changes in Charlotte and created in conjunction with former McColl Center artist in residence Sonja Hinrichsen. Featured artists include:
- Kelly Gutierrez's graphic design installation examines ethnic identity and labeling through photography, using the stories of local Charlotteans and nationally known people.
- Annabel Manning's solar print etchings/visual tapestry installation combines oral history and photography in an exhibit focused on the changing immigrant story of Latin Americans in Charlotte.

Cartoonist Lena Hopkins available from 11am - 1pm.

SCHEDULE

10 am: Doors open to public, "Drum Strong"

10:30 am: Exhibit curator and historian Dr. Pamela Grundy leads interviews and discussions with individuals featured in the exhibit."Keep it, share it, pass it on" - Learn about cultural tradition in 21st century Charlotte as members of our area's Indian, African and Hispanic communities, including several people featured in Changing Places, engage in a lively conversation about the pleasures and challenges of perpetuating cultural traditions in a multicultural society. Audience members will be encouraged to share their stories as well.

11 am: Dance performance, with audience invited to participate

11:30 am: Performance by "Real Orchestra" presented by Monique Pollock

12 pm: Discussion led by Dr. Pamela Grundy. "Pushing past stereotypes" - During the past year, staff and students at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have launched several efforts to fight bullying, especially through challenging stereotypes that students hold of one another. The video "Souls of our Students," featured in Changing Places, plays a key role in CMS's new anti-bullying curriculum. A panel of adults and students will discuss anti-bullying efforts and assess the difference they're making at area schools, as well as in the community at large.

12 - 1 pm: Sun print art workshop presented by Annabel Manning. Families can bring small items or use images from magazines to create small solar prints.

12:30 pm: Dance performance, with audience invited to participate

1 - 1:30 pm: Performance by "Real Orchestra" presented by Monique Pollock

2 pm: Song workshop including cultural variations on traditional children’s rhymes, teaching songs in Spanish, French, and Swahili

3 pm: "Drum Strong"
