Experience the rich traditions of Día de Reyes with performances, family-friendly activities, and the Carolinas’ largest Rosca de Reyes
CHARLOTTE – Levine Museum of the New South, in partnership with Fiestas Patrias and Manolo’s Bakery, is celebrating its annual Three Kings Day Festival. This intergenerational festival will take place from 12-3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Second Ward Gymnasium (710 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.). Admission is free, and the event is open to all ages.
The festival will feature a vibrant lineup, including a performance by the Cielito Lindo Chorus, a children’s choir singing beloved Latin American holiday songs, interactive drumming activities with NC Brazilian Arts, captivating dance demonstrations, photo opportunities with the three wise men, and educational family-friendly crafts and activities.
“We’re proud to partner with Fiestas Patrias and Manolo’s Bakery to bring vibrant traditions of Día de Reyes to Charlotte each year and honor holidays Charlotte’s Hispanic communities hold close to their hearts,” said Richard Cooper, Levine Museum President & CEO. “This festival is a wonderful opportunity for families and neighbors to come together, celebrate diverse cultures and learn about the history and traditions that shape our community.”
Three Kings Day, also known as Día de Reyes or “the Epiphany,” commemorates the visit of the wise men who brought gifts to baby Jesus. Across Latin America and worldwide, this holiday is celebrated with music, dance, art, gift-giving and the sharing of Rosca de Reyes – a sweet bread symbolizing unity. Hidden inside is a figurine representing baby Jesus, and the lucky recipient is traditionally responsible for hosting Día de La Candelaria on Feb. 2.
“Three Kings Day is as big as Christmas in our country – it’s a time to celebrate love surrounded by our loved ones,” said Manolo Betancur, Owner and CEO of Manolo’s Bakery. “We eat king cake to remind us that although we are away from our countries or home, we will never be away from our traditions.”
As a key partner, Manolo’s Bakery is once again crafting the largest Rosca de Reyes in the Carolinas – a showstopping highlight that embodies the festival’s vibrant spirit.
“This 2025 marks the ninth year of celebrating the beautiful holiday, and each year, the event continues to grow, serving Charlotte’s Hispanic community and showcasing the incredible talent of Latino artists and performers,” said Rafel Prieto, Co-Founder of Fiestas Patrias. “Fiestas Patrias is dedicated to supporting and encouraging any effort to observe the special holidays of Hispanic America, and excited to share the traditions of Día de Reyes.”
