COMMUNISTS ACTIVE IN THIS COUNTRY
The address of Robert J. Putnam of Canton before the Rutherford County Club Friday night was interesting and unusual. He painted a dark picture of Socialism and Communism in our country and asked the question: How far left has this country gone towards Socialism and Communism? Can we stop this trend?
Socialism sounds better than Communism though there is little difference. One writer has said that Socialism is about ten years ahead of Communism.
Mr. Putnam has made a special study of these problems. He promised God when he was in World War two that if he would let him (Putnam) live he would do something for Him. While we did not agree with all he said, we admit he gave all thinking Americans something to think about. It may be later than we think.
There are two ideas in the world today, – Communism which ignores God, and Democracy which is supposed to believe in God. – we must remember that the Communists are smart, deceptive and ever on the job. They “Bore from Within.” They are too smart to come out in the open with their Doctrine of hate. They have been active in this country for many years. They have infiltrated into our Federal Government, also many state and large city governments without even the officials knowing it, certainly the majority did not know. They make many false promises, which many “Fall for.”
Mr. Putnam says that much of our Social Legislation is Communist sponsored, promising something for nothing. Many of our leaders have talked, “Security,” benefits, retirement, etc. until many Americans are looking to Washington for help rather than helping themselves. Our forefathers knew nothing about all these benefits. They prepared for old age, for example, while they could.
There is no doubt but that America has gone far towards Socialism and Communism within the past thirty or forty years. The average citizen thinks little about this problem as long as he or she has economic security. Many love these “Promises”. They do not realize that there is no such thing as, “Something for Nothing.”
The conflict between Communism and Democracy is likely to last for many years. – Many Communist leaders have already endorsed Eisenhower for President, according to Mr. Putnam. He, Eisenhower had nothing to do with this. We hope and believe he will do his best to “Eradicate Them.” Let’s give him time and our full support. The future of the U.S.A. will determine the future of the world. We must preserve our Freedom, or Democracy at all costs. The Spirit of Christ is our only hope. The Spirit of Communism is inspired or sponsored by the Devil. With us it’s Christ, or chaos. This should start with each individual.
